The very first Trooping the Colour of King Charles's reign is underway!

The annual birthday parade, typically held on the second Saturday in June, begins with a procession from Buckingham Palace to House Guards Palace, followed by a ceremony at Horse Guards, a procession back to Buckingham Palace featuring royals in carriages, and finally an appearance of royals on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Like last year's Trooping and the coronation last month, the balcony moment this year is expected to feature a smaller number of royals than in years past.

King Charles will ride on horseback on the parade, marking "the first time that the reigning Monarch has ridden at Trooping the Colour since 1986, when Queen Elizabeth II last rode," according to Buckingham Palace. At Trooping the Colour 2022, Charles took the royal salute on his mother's behalf, and this year, he will take the royal salute as monarch. In addition to Charles riding horseback in the parade, Prince William and Princess Anne will also be on horseback.
