Every time the Washington Capitals play, there is a chance for people to witness something great. That is because we are at the point where every goal that Alex Ovechkin scores gets him closer to the NHL record for most career goals.

There is a somewhat long way to go still, but he is well on his way. There are also some other records that he is breaking along the way and each of them shows just how great he is.

On Wednesday, the Capitals were on the road to play against the Vancouver Canucks. Just over five minutes into the first period, Ovechkin scored his 12th of the season. This goal tied him with Wayne Gretzky for the most road goals in the history of the NHL.

Alex Ovechkin continues to score lots of goals in the National Hockey League.

Later in that same period, Ovechkin scored his 13th goal of the season which broke the NHL record of 402 road goals, which Gretzky held for a long time. Now, Ovechkin sits all alone with 403 goals away from Washington.

It is a really nice accomplishment for a variety of reasons. For one, any time you break a record set by Wayne Gretzky all those years ago, you should be proud of it.

It is also harder to score on the road than it is at hom, because you always get the other team’s best defenders when you are on the road. Ovechkin just continues to score lots of goals no matter who else is on the ice with him.

These were goals 792 and 793 in his career, which is just marvelous. He is now seven goals away from becoming the third player in NHL history to reach 800. When he scores his 802nd goal, he will pass Gordie Howe for the second most in NHL history. Then, it is just Wayne for him to eclipse.

Watching this unfold over the next 3-4 years is going to be incredible. He isn’t slowing down, as his 13 goals now rank seventh in the NHL, but only three players have more than 14. His days of leading the league in goals might be over, but you also just never know with this guy.

As long as he can pump out 35-50 goals in each of the next three seasons, he will be right around breaking the record over that time. It is coming, and the sports world will be ready to cheer when it does happen.

Ovechkin’s next chance to score some goals will come on Thursday night when they play against the Seattle Kraken. This is another road game for him to try and build on what is now his all-time road goal-scoring record. It is a privilege to watch this legend.
