Babbel increases ratings volume by 64% with In-App Review API

Background

Founded in 2008, Babbel is a language learning ecosystem that enables its users to communicate across cultures. To empower their product team to deliver the best app possible, Babbel regularly gathers and analyzes user reviews. As a key measure of their success, Babbel wanted to increase their overall Play Store rating, as well as the number of ratings and reviews they collected.

What they did

As Babbel explored ways to collect more user feedback, they came across the Google Play In-App Review API. The API lets app developers prompt users to submit Play Store ratings and reviews at any point in the user journey, without the inconvenience of leaving the app. After researching the API, the Babbel team prioritized and implemented it.

To increase the chance of positive reviews, Babbel placed their rating prompt at a moment when users feel they’ve achieved something in their language learning journey, such as after they finish a lesson.

Results

"We saw an immediate positive impact on our average rating and volume of ratings after the native rating prompt was rolled out," said Mathew Parry, ASO Manager at Babbel.

Before-and-after analysis conducted 19 days on either side of the rollout showed an increase of 0.11 stars in Babbel’s daily average rating. They also saw an increase in their overall Play Store rating.

At the same time, the In-App Review API increased Babbel’s rating volume by 64%. As a result, Babbel greatly benefits from a steady stream of feedback from their users to guide them on how to continue to deliver delightful and helpful experiences.
