What Is 'Cruella' About?

Cruella is the origin story of the Disney villain Cruella de Vil who famously wanted to make a coat out of dog fur in the 1961 movie 101 Dalmatians.

Cruella is set in 1970s London during the punk rock movement, and follows aspiring fashion designer Estella Miller (Stone) as she follows a path that makes her notorious on the fashion scene.

Glenn Close, who played Cruella de Vil in the live actions movies 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians (2000) serves as an executive producer on Cruella alongside Stone. Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and he's also in line to direct the sequel.

Will There Be a 'Cruella 2'?

On August 13, 2021, Deadline reported that Stone had signed up to star in a Cruella sequel. It's unclear at this point whether the movie will get a release similar to the first one, with a tandem cinematic and Premier Access release on Disney+, or whether it will go straight to movie theaters.

Endeavor represents Stone and the executive chairman Patrick Whitesell said of her client's deal: "We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio's willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner."

The Hollywood Reporter revealed the payday Stone can expect for the new project. According to its sources, Stone will rake in a low eight-figure payday for the sequel, which will mark an increase from the $8 million she got for starring in Cruella.
