Melvin leaves A’s for Padres, per reports

A’s manager Bob Melvin is reportedly leaving the club to take over as manager for the Padres

MLB Rumors: Bob Melvin is leaving the Oakland A’s to join the San Diego Padres as their new manager, per reports. This is a bit of a bombshell, as Melvin has been the manager of the A’s since the middle of the 2011 season, and while there had been talk about him possibly being a fit for the New York Mets job, I had seen little indication that the A’s were willing to let him leave.

Melvin managed the Seattle Mariners from 2003-04, and then was the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005 until early in the 2009 season. Melvin had a very successful run as the A’s manager, and will now be replacing Jayce Tingler, who was fired after two years with the Padres after their disappointing late season collapse this year. Melvin will be inheriting a very talented team, but one that reportedly had chemistry and clubhouse issues this year.
