Celebrity couple’s style is part of Hollywood fashion folklore, with the images of Justin and Britney in double denim and Posh and Becks in matching leather ingrained in the public psyche. The most recent duo to be inaugurated into the matchy-matchy hall of fame, Kanye West and Julia Fox, reminded us of the fact that couple’s looks are more contrived than off-the-cuff. It’s rare to see a pair dress totally in sync when the paparazzi isn’t lurking, but for Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde, their day-to-day dressing is even better together.
The pair, who fell for one another on the set of Wilde’s second directorial feature, Don’t Worry Darling, have been radiating #couplegoals since they were first photographed hand in hand at the wedding of Styles’s agent Jeffrey Azoff and Glenne Christiaansen in January 2021. Wearing Gucci’s bohemian-luxe finery and The Vampire’s Wife face masks, they were a holy union of lace, ribbons and silk; Wilde the perfect foil to the free-spirited aesthetic Styles has carved out for himself.
In LA, Harry and Olivia live in jeans, tees and trainers. The only signifiers of their fame are their accessories. Styles is rarely spotted without his Saint Laurent bug-eyed white California sunnies, while Olivia wears Lexxola’s popular tinted Damien pair. They both come adorned in gold jewellery; Harry’s Gucci (obvs!), and Olivia’s by Starling. Strolling along arm in arm in distressed denim, battered plimsolls and band shirts, nothing indicates that a stylist is behind their downtime uniform. It’s not the kind of knowing streetwear worn by the Biebers, nor the low-key über-high fashion of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky; it’s pop-to-the-shops kind of clothing. In an era when most celebrities trade off their pre- and post-gym outfits, Styles and Wilde – who don’t even have a portmanteau, unlike Juliye, Bennifer etc – are bucking the trend.
What’s interesting about this pair is that they understand the power behind playing it cool and staying true to themselves. Rather than urging their fans to buy the same sneakers as them (Olivia’s are Commes des Garçons Play low-tops, while Harry wears retro Adidas lace-ups, in case you were wondering), they make a case for originality during their rare appearances together. “Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with,” Styles once told Vogue, while Wilde said of her partner’s modern, gender-fluid image: “It’s pretty powerful and kind of extraordinary to see someone in his position redefining what it can mean to be a man with confidence.”
A dedicated cheerleader of his work, Olivia often swaps out her Bella Freud and Pangaia jumpers for Harry Styles tour merch, proving that she’s still on a (watermelon sugar) high for Harry – even while they are going long distance and doing their own thing. That kind of PDA is much more relatable than matching Balenciaga in our books. Don’t Worry Darling might not be out until the autumn, but you can bet their unified couple’s glamour will be a lesson in individuality when it comes around.
