The world will have to wait 375 full days for Don’t Worry Darling to hit theaters, but not for a first glimpse at the movie. On Monday, director Olivia Wilde—who also appears in the film—shared a taste of footage from and the release date for her sophomore directorial effort. “In theaters only.  9 • 23 • 22,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a 10-second clip from the psychological drama.

The teaser offers a tease of stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles—whom Wilde is rumored to be dating after separating from her partner of eight years, Jason Sudeikis, at the start of 2020. Suburban tensions seem to be high for Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles). At one point, the couple passionately kisses. At another, Alice appears to be suffocating beneath plastic wrap. As previously announced, the film centers on “a 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community” who “begins to worry his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.”

Don’t Worry Darling marks the second film for Wilde as a director, following 2019’s Booksmart. She reunites with that film’s screenwriter, Katie Silberman, who adapted Don’t Worry Darling’s screenplay from a spec script by Shane and Carey Van Dyke. In addition to Wilde, Pugh, and Styles, the movie co-stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, and Nick Kroll

Wilde has previously spoken of her “no asshole policy” on sets, which reportedly led to the firing of Shia LaBeouf and hiring of Styles last September. In December 2020, Variety reported that LaBeouf allegedly “exhibited poor behavior and his style clashed with the cast and crew, including Wilde, who ultimately fired him.” She later thanked Styles on Instagram for boarding her film at the eleventh hour, writing, “He didn’t have to join our circus, but he jumped on board with humility and grace, and blew us away every day with his talent, warmth, and ability to drive backwards.”

Don’t Worry Darling premieres in the midst of next year’s awards season on Sept. 23, 2022.
