It will take weeks for some businesses outside Zion National Park to clean up after flash flooding.

The three that suffered the most damage include two hotels — Cable Mountain Lodge and Zion Campfire Lodge — as well as Hoodoos General Store.

The 42 rooms at Campfire Lodge will have to be torn down, according to owner Stewart Ferber. Water, mud and debris rushed through the doors, filling the rooms and hallways, during Tuesday’s flash flooding.

The campground, with 185 spots, won’t look like normal for a couple of weeks.

“Luckily, I have two other hotels that will get us through this,” Ferber said. “We got through the pandemic, and we’ll figure out what’s next.”

The $500,000 in flood insurance that Ferber had, which he says is the maximum, won’t cover the millions of dollars in losses.

Across the street, Hoodoos General Store had a team of people moving tons of mud. Much of the landscaping had washed away, and mud coated the floor of the store.

“When we were finally able to open the door, it was like a river flooding out,” owner Zoe Gregoric said. “We had to dig a pathway for it to go out.”

Gregoric had hoped to reopen Saturday but said a lot of work remains to be done. She’s hoping to wrap up within a week or two.

“I’ve seen, for sure, flash floods and big rain and stuff like this, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen,” she said, adding she’s lived in the area for 23 years.

Gregoric and Ferber both said Cable Mountain was also badly hit, although Ferber suffered the most damage. They're thankful no one was hurt during the flash flooding.
