It looks like Leylah Annie Fernandez’s second Grand Slam semifinal will have to wait.
Fernandez fell 2-6, 7-6, 3-6 in an epic two and a half hour quarter-final to unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan on Wednesday.
The 28-year old Trevisan took advantage of a whopping 44 unforced errors by the Canadian, while the Italian won 70% of her first service points.
Trevisan moves on to face the 18-year old Coco Gauff in the semifinals. It represents the first grand slam semifinal appearance for both women.
Fernadez’s loss means that there are no more Canadian’s in contention for singles titles.
However, in mixed doubles, Ottawa native Gabriela Dabrowski is still alive, as she is into the quarterfinals with her partner John Peers. The pair are ranked third, and will be facing off against Lucie Hradecka and Gonzalo Escobar later on Wednesday night.
Dabrowski made it to the third round of the women’s doubles event, falling to Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok in three sets on Sunday.
In the girls singles draw (for amateur players under the age of 18), Canadian’s Victoria Mboko and Annabelle Xu are into their quarter-finals. The 15-year old Mboko will be playing the American Liv Hovde, while the 18-year old Xu squares off against Johanne Christine Svendsen.
