Summary

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 75th-minute penalty at Carrow Road was enough to keep Norwich City rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and continue Ralf Rangnick’s unbeaten start as Manchester United manager.

Norwich performed well but were ultimately the architects of their own downfall once again after wasting multiple chances throughout the game. The win moves United up to fifth in the table and level on points with fourth-placed West Ham, who play tomorrow.

The hosts began the game as the better team with some great positive play which just lacked quality in the final third. Alex Telles, Harry Maguire and Ronaldo all tested Tim Krul in the first half but Dean Smith was probably the happier of the two managers at the break.

After half-time, Smith’s side continued their pressure with David de Gea keeping his side in the game with three superb saves. The Spaniard kept out Ozan Kabak twice, as well as brilliantly tipping Teem Pukki’s powerful effort over the bar.

Wasted opportunities and De Gea’s heroics cost Norwich as Max Aarons dragged down Ronaldo in the box. Referee Darren England pointed to the spot and United’s top scorer calmly converted the all-important penalty as his side secured the three points.

Penalties galore!

Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty was the sixth of the day!

Jorginho scored two for Chelsea and Raphinha grabbed one in the same game. Mo Salah tucked on away against Aston Villa after Raheem Sterling scored his 100th Premier League goal from the spot against Wolves in the early kick-off.

Reaction from Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick is still unbeaten as Manchester United manager but he admitted after the game that there is still a lot of work to do.

"From the start we controlled the game but didn’t always have the best possible solutions. Defensively we did well, tactically in the first half we didn’t allow them to have too many shots or chances." Rangnick said.

"The second half was a little bit better but at the end, we were lucky to have a clean sheet and there were two or three clean sheets by David de Gea. It's another clean sheet but still a lot of work to do.

"We have conceded the highest amount of goals in the top ten. Now we have two clean sheets which is good but we still need to improve on that away, especially against physical teams or teams that attack high like Norwich did.

"It’s also a question of body language and physicality and this was one of the major issues that we could have done better."

First since 1903

After two 1-0 victories, Ralf Rangnick has become only the second Manchester United manager to keep a clean sheet in his first two games in charge.

Harry Maguire looks back on the game

Manchester United didn't perform to their best this afternoon and have Norwich's lack of quality as well as David De Gea to thank for a clean sheet. Captain Harry Maguire gave his honest thoughts.

He said: "It was a tough game, we didn’t play as well as we’d like to play, sometimes you need to dig in and keep a clean sheet. When you're playing every week, some performances aren’t going to be at the highest level.

"The most important thing was the three points. It was tough conditions, they put us under pressure they were aggressive. If we keep a clean sheet, you’ve got a great chance of winning.

"We’ve been very disappointed with our defensive record this year, we know we need to do better. David de Gea did great today."

Reaction from Dean Smith

Norwich remain at the bottom of the Premier League table after the defeat but Dean Smith was happy with his team's performance.

He said: "I can’t complain about the performance. We know we’re up against a very good team in Manchester United but we didn’t take a backward step. We defended when we needed to and created some good moments. That’s what we need to get better at – those moments.

"We’ve just played two of the top six, we dominated at Tottenham but didn’t take our chances and we’ve gone toe-to-toe today with one of the big guns and a dubious penalty won it for them."

Ronaldo makes history once again

With his goal to win the game from the penalty spot, Cristiano Ronaldo has become only the third player to score for three different Manchester United managers.
