‘BAIPAN BHARI DEVA’ (MARATHI) REVIEW | 30 June, 2023

Jio Studios and Emveebee Media (P.) Ltd.’s Baipan Bhari Deva (Marathi; UA) is the story of six sisters who decide to participate in a dance competition.

Jaya (Rohini Hattangady), Shashi (Vandana Gupte), Sadhana (Sukanya Kulkarni Mone), Pallavi (Suchitra Bandekar), Ketaki (Shilpa Navalkar) and Charu (Deepa Parab Chaudhari) are six sisters, all married. There is tension between some of them for misunderstandings of the past. One day, Shashi decides that they all should participate in the Mangalagour dance competition. In their younger days, Jaya and Shashi used to be good dancers while Sadhana was a good singer.

Each of the six sisters has her own reason to agree to participate. They start practising in right earnest along with some other young girls whom they take in their group. Jaya and Shashi have not been on talking terms. Pallavi and Ketaki don’t get along well. Sadhana resents Charu’s bossy nature as she works in the same office, as Charu’s subordinate. The misunderstandings between the sisters reduce and even get wiped out as they interact during the dance practice sessions held at their unoccupied maternal home. Do they win the competition?

Vaishali Naik has written an excellent story of grit and determination but has embellished it with such wonderful family emotions that the end result is phenomenal. Ketan Padgaonkar and Nikhita Kanungo are the associate writers. Naik’s screenplay also deserves distinction marks because the drama engages the viewers so beautifully that it makes them laugh with the sisters, cry with them and root for them. It would not be incorrect to say that the fast-paced drama doesn’t get boring for even a minute. The way in which Vaishali has woven the emotions in the competition drama deserves a lot of praise. Vaishali Naik’s dialogues, with additional dialogues by Omkar Mangesh Datta, are extraordinary.

Rohini Hattangady does an exceptional job as Jaya. Vandana Gupte shines in the role of Shashi. Sukanya Kulkarni Mone is absolutely endearing as Sadhana. Suchitra Bandekar is first-rate in the role of Pallavi. Shilpa Navalkar leaves a fantastic mark as Ketaki. Deepa Parab Chaudhari is excellent as Charu. Sharad Ponkshe lends phenomenal support as Anna Bhonsle. Tushar Dalvi has his moments as Pallavi’s husband, Anirudh. Suruchi Adarkar leaves a lovely mark as Shashi’s daughter, Chinmayee. Swapnil Rajshekhar is good as Ketaki’s husband, Vaibhav Patil. Piyush Ranade is natural in the role of Charu’s husband, Ashutosh Deshmukh. Satish Joshi is endearing as Jaya’s husband, Arun Desai. Ramakant Dayama makes a lovely mark as Jaya’s therapist. Riya Sharma is cute as Sadhana’s daughter-in-law, Madhavi. Nutan Aasgaonkar (as Chinmayee’s mother-in-law) lends fine support. Akshay Kulkarni (as Chinmayee’s husband), Varad Chavan (as the fitness trainer), Ruchita Jadhav (as Priyanka), Ganesh Jadhav (as Avadhoot Kakade), Sakshi Paranjape (as Avadhoot Kakade’s wife), Bela Shinde (as the doctor), Nayana Nerulkar (as the doctor), Mangal Gangal (as the mother of the six sisters), Urmila Zagade (as young Jaya), Sheetal Geete (as young Shashi), Radhika Godbole (as young Sadhana), Julie Mone (as young Sadhana), Reema Thakare (as young Pallavi), Sai Bramhe (as young Pallavi), Pallavi Bhagwat (as young Ketaki), Siddhi Pawar (as young Ketaki), Sand Jadhav (as young Charu) and Arun and Arjun (both as Charu’s twins) lend lovely support.

Kedar Shinde’s direction is superb. He has not only narrated the subject with conviction but has also extracted very good work from out of his cast members. Sai-Piyush’s music is lovely. Valay Mulgund’s lyrics are very nice. Subhash Nakashe’s choreography is eye-filling. Sai-Piyush’s background music is fantastic. Vasudev Rane’s cinematography is superb. Mahesh Kudalkar’s art direction is of a fine standard. Mayur Hardas deserves distinction marks for his sharp editing.

On the whole, Baipan Bhari Deva is a sureshot hit. Ladies and family audience will love the film. It should be remade in Hindi for a larger audience.
