2022 NFL trade deadline takeaways: All the biggest deals, a surprising move, more from a record-setting day

USATSI

It's not hyperbole to say that the 2022 NFL Trade Deadline was the craziest deadline in league history. There were 12 players traded in 10 deals made on Tuesday leading up to the 4 p.m. ET deadline, which was the most ever made on deadline day. Not only were there a large number of deals struck, but there were also a number of blockbuster moves, including Bradley Chubb heading to Miami and T.J. Hockenson staying in the NFC North but being dealt to the Vikings.

Here's a quick rundown of some of the more notable deals that occurred:

Most surprising trade

I don't think it's much of a debate to say that Calvin Ridley being shipped to the Jaguars is the most surprising deal of the day. Was anyone even thinking about the now former Falcons receiver lately? After all, Ridley is suspended for the entirety of this season after he was caught betting on NFL games during an absence from football. He can apply for reinstatement in February and this is a pretty complex deal because of his uncertain status.

If Ridley reportedly is reinstated by a certain date, the Falcons will receive a 2023 fifth round pick. If he is not reinstated by the date, it's a 2023 sixth-round pick. After that, Atlanta receives a 2024 selection that could escalate all the way to a second rounder if he reaches certain milestones.

On top of this simply being a fascinating trade from a logisitical standpoint, it also has the potential to be a game-changer for the Jacksonville offense as early as 2023. Ridley was regarded as one of the bright, young pass catchers in the NFL and now has the potential of being Trevor Lawrence's go-to weapon.

Big picture storyline

Two of the more notable trades of the day were Bradley Chubb to the Dolphins and Chase Claypool to the Bears. One thing that those two trades have in common is the stamp of approval they give to their respective quarterbacks, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Fields.

With Tagovailoa, the Dolphins traded away their 2023 first-round pick (among others) to acquire Chubb. That pick (from the 49ers) was their only first-round pick this coming spring after their own was forfeited as a result of the Tom Brady tampering investigation. Not only is that willingness to give up the first rounder a sign that the front office believes this team can make a push this season, but it also put them out of the quarterback market in this coming draft. That's as big of a stamp of approval that you'll see from the front office with Tagovailoa outside of a contract extension.

On a similar tone, the Bears seem to be rewarding Justin Fields' strong play as of late by giving him a much-needed pass-catching weapon in Chase Claypool. The fact that they were willing to give up their own second round pick -- arguably a lofty price to pay -- is a sign that they believe in what the young quarterback is doing.

So, we have two quarterback who we questioned coming into the year if they were truly going to be "franchise guys" have their teams make moves that directly or indirectly show their long-term support of them.

The Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts beat the trade deadline buzzer with running back Nyheim Hines moving from Indianapolis to Buffalo while the Colts receive running back Zack Moss and a conditional sixth-round pick that could potentially become a fifth-round pick. Hines is a huge pickup for the NFL's top-ranked passing offense, averaging 307.7 passing yards per game, as he has the fifth-most receiving yards among running backs since entering the league in 2018.

Most Receiving Yards by Running Back
Since 2018
Austin Ekeler 2,804
Alvin Kamara 2,724
Christian McCaffrey 2,720
James White 1,865
Nyheim Hines 1,725 <<

The Jacksonville Jaguars have pulled off what's likely today's top trade deadline stunner, acquiring currently suspended wide receiver Calvin Ridley from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange a compensation package two conditional picks that could be worth at maximum a 2023 5th rounder and a 2024 2nd rounder. Ridley, currently 27 years old and turning 28 in December, was tied for the fifth-most receiving yards in the NFL in 2020, the last full season he played. A nice target for Trevor Lawrence alongside Christian Kirk in the Jaguars passing game.

Most Receiving Yards in 2020

Stefon Diggs           1,535
Travis Kelce           1,416
DeAndre Hopkins 1,407
Justin Jefferson     1,400
Calvin Ridley         1,374
Davante Adams     1,374

The Dolphins backfield exchange today after sending Chase Edmonds to the Denver Broncos and adding Jeff Wilson Jr. ultimately nets out as big positive for Miami.  Edmonds was dead last in rush yards over expected this season, per Next Gen Stats, while Wilson Jr. ranks seventh in RYOE this season.

The Miami Dolphins continue to wheel and deal, this time reuniting Jeff Wilson Jr., another former San Francisco 49ers running back,  with Mike McDaniel, Miami's current head coach and San Francisco's former offensive coordinator and run-game coordinator. The Dolphins signed former 49ers running back Raheem Mostert to a one-year, $2.1 million deal this past offseason, and now Wilson comes over in exchange for a fifth round pick.

Wilson Jr. is a nice Chase Edmonds replacement for Miami, since Edmonds is now a Denver Bronco after being included in the Dolphins trade for Bradley Chubb. The newest Dolphins running back probably couldn't have asked for a better landing spot after losing his role to Christian McCaffrey after the 49ers acquired the former Carolina Panther about two weeks ago.

With Chubb being acquired for a compensation package that includes a first round pick, the Dolphins have traded all of the three first round picks they received in the 49ers trade up for Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 2021 first rounder was part of their deal to trade up for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, the 2022 first rounder was sent to the Chiefs to acquire wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and the 2023 selection was sent to the Broncos as part of the Bradley Chubb deal. Not a bad haul, all things considered.

The Dolphins trading for Bradley Chubb could revive their pass rush as he has the third-highest pass-rush win rate when lined up as an edge rusher, wreaking havoc at a rate only topped by Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.

The Green Bay Packers may be 7-0 on the field against the Chicago Bears since hiring head coach Matt LaFleur in 2019, but today they suffered their first loss to their NFC North foe in coming up short in the Chase Claypool sweepstakes. CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that the Packers were in the mix for former Pittsburgh Steelers Chase Claypool, but the Bears seemingly swooped in to prevent Green Bay from giving Aaron Rodgers some much-needed help at wide receiver.

The Dolphins currently rank 21st in the NFL in team pressure percentage (31.5%). Their acquisition of Bradley Chubb could take their defense to the next level. Chubb alongside Emmanuel Ogbah, whose 18.0 sacks from 2020-2021 were tied for the 10th-most in the NFL, is a solid pass-rushing one-two punch. Ogbah only has one sack so far this season, but that could now change quickly.

The Dallas Cowboys may also look to add depth to their wide receiver group. Former first-round pick CeeDee Lamb is their clear-cut top option, as his 73 targets account for 31.6% of the team's targets. That figure makes Lamb the third-most targeted receiver in the entire NFL, narrowly trailing the RamsCooper Kupp (33.1% team target percentage), the reigning Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP, and the DolphinsTyreek Hill (32.5% team target percentage), the highest-paid wide receiver on an annual basis.

The Cowboys did sign 26-year-old receiver Michael Gallup to a five-year, $57.5 million extension this past offseason, but he's still working to clear the final mental hurdle from a torn ACL he suffered in 2021, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. Gallup has 12 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown in five games played this season. Maybe a cheaper trade acquisition like the Denver Broncos KJ Hamler could be in the works.

With Chase Claypool now off the trade market and on to the Chicago Bears, the next big wide receiver trade target would appear to be Brandin Cooks. Despite his freshly-inked, two-year contract extension worth $39.8 million this offseason, it appears he would entertain a move off of the rebuilding Texans. I listed Cooks as the player that should be the Packers' top trade target for their ailing offense.

Texans head coach Lovie Smith told reporters that Brandin Cooks was not at practice today due to personal reasons. Hmmmm.

It feels like he's going to be moved, but NFL Media maintains that's not the feeling behind the scenes.

Thought about this with the Hockenson trade on the Lions side. Is Jameson Williams coming back?

Been a while since we heard anything on him.

From Weeks 5-8, Chase Claypool has 21 catches for 232 yards and is averaging 11 yards per catch. The Bears' 55 receptions are the worst in the league and the 784 receiving yards are the second worst.

Per NFL Media, the Steelers are receiving the Bears' original second-round pick for Claypool. Not the pick from the Ravens.

May be the time to remind everyone the Cowboys only got a 2022 fifth-round pick and a swapping of 2022 sixth-round picks for Amari Cooper.

The Steelers got a second-round pick for Chase Claypool.

The Vikings have a new TE, the Bears have a new WR, the Packers ............. haven't done anything.

Claypool was a name that was rumored in Green Bay, but now he's playing for a rival. Packers absolutely have to add someone who can catch the football. Fan base will have a meltdown.

The Bears needed a No. 2 WR in the worst possible way. N'Keal Harry looked like he was going to fill that No. 2 role with Dante Pettis a steh deep-ball WE. that changes with teh Bears getting Chase Claypool and Justin Fields evolving in the passing game.

The Bears are getting better, even though they are selling off players. I like the move for Chicago. Also, George Pickens gets more time for Steelers.

Win-win.

Could we see another wide receiver traded today? There's a lot of attention being given to Brandin Cooks of the Houston Texans.

He isn't at practice today, per multiple reporters, and he's liking tweets about him being traded! Still, NFL Media says nothing is imminent as of now. Will be interesting to see what happens.

This is an interesting move, since the Bears' offense has gotten going ever since their bye week. Fields' unit has racked up 370-plus yards of total offense against the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys in back-to-back weeks.

The former second-round pick out of Notre Dame is in the third year of his rookie deal. He burst onto the scene as a rookie for the Steelers, catching 62 passes for 873 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020, but hasn't been able to keep that pace.

Claypool is averaging a career-low 38.9 receiving yards per game. He's a big target that has legitimate star potential. During an appearance on the I AM ATHLETE podcast earlier this year, he claimed he can be a top-three receiver in the league.
