UPDATE: Highway 43 in Whitecourt closed until further notice following train collision

Aug 11, 2023 | 11:23 AM

UPDATE:

Whitecourt RCMP has announced they will soon be clearing the scene.

The blaze from the incident has now been extinguished, and CN and LEDCOR crews are working to fix the damages caused to the train tracks.

One lane of traffic has re-opened, but mounties are warning residents to expect delays, as both lanes won’t re-open until damages to the train tracks are repaired, which is anticipated to be after 10 p.m.

Highway 43 in Whitecourt is temporarily closed, following a collision between a train and a fuel truck.

Whitecourt RCMP, Fire Department, EMS, Alberta Sheriff’s, and CN police are all on the scene.

No fatalities have been reported, but Mounties expect to be at the collision site most of the day as the investigation continues.

Highway 43 near the Highway 32 junction in Whitecourt is currently closed until further notice, and the public is being asked to avoid the area as fuel is a hazardous material and explosions are still possible.

More updates are expected.
