Donna and Sophie are back together!

Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried — who played the mother-daughter duo in both Mamma Mia! films — reunited on the red carpet ahead of the 81st annual Golden Globes on Sunday, after Streep, 74, spotted Seyfried, 38, posing for photographers and surprised her with a hello mid-photo.

Seyfried squealed at the reunion, which was caught on camera. Streep gave her on-screen kid a quick kiss on the head before jetting off.

Despite her excitement at being reunited with the actress, Seyfried quickly regained her composure and got back to taking snaps ahead of the awards show at the Beverly Hilton.

A possible reunion came up earlier, though, as Seyfried admitted during the Variety and Entertainment Tonight pre-show that she was open to a third installment of the hit musical film, which she last revisited in 2018 for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Word of a third installment has been circling since the sequel’s release, and many of the lead cast members have shared their enthusiasm to return to the Greek island world for another time.

In 2020, Seyfried told Collider of the possibility of a third movie, “Every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other.”

The film’s producer, Judy Craymer, similarly shared an update on a future movie around the same time, telling Variety she was supposed to be working on it during the pandemic. "I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”

In May, Craymer shared another update on the franchise’s future as she told Deadline that a third movie musical is in “earliest stages.”

She admitted, though, that she’s keen to bring Streep back into the fold for the potential future film. "There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back, and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna."

"I don't want to over-egg it," she added of the unofficial news, "but I know there's a trilogy there."

Streep later told Vogue of the possibility of her revisiting Donna, who was killed off in the sequel, "If there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there."

"I’m up for anything," the Oscar winner said. "... I told Judy if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died."

She joked, "We may have to call it Grand-Mamma Mia! by the time we make it!"
