Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper David Stockdale has admitted he’s more of an entertainer than a singer after treating his new teammates to his own rendition of Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin' on a Prayer’. The initiation song is often a moment that a new arrival dreads and the rest of his teammates enjoy. But Stockdale relished the moment, even though, by his own admission, singing isn’t necessarily his biggest talent.

“I did it,” the 36-year-old goalkeeper revealed on 5 Live’s Daily Euros podcast. “I’m not the best singer as you can tell being from Yorkshire, as there’s not many good singers from Yorkshire. It was all about the energy for me. I had to get down off the chair, work the room, get people involved and bring energy. Then let the good singers go on after me.”

Stockdale arrived at Hillsborough from Wycombe Wanderers on a free transfer this summer. The veteran shot-stopper, who was once called up for England, has enjoyed a nomadic career which has seen him take in spells across the top seven tiers of English football.

He played every single game as Wycombe reached the League One play-off final last season and made his final appearance in their 2-0 defeat against Sunderland at Wembley in May. Now with his 17th different club, Stockdale has impressed his new teammates with his professionalism during pre-season.

“Going off last season and before that, he’s been a good goalkeeper but having worked with him for a few weeks now as well, he’s impressive,” Liam Palmer revealed earlier this month.

“He’s made some great saves and he has a calmness about him on the ball as well. He’s really in control of his work and that runs throughout the defence and gives them a calmness. He’s been great in terms of what he brings as a player and a person.”

Stockdale has enjoyed integrating into a new dressing room but admits it’s what you do on the pitch that matters most.

“Your always going to gravitate towards the ones that know you,” Stockdale said. “It’s just your character and everybody knows in football, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good lad, it matters what you do on the football pitch.

“If I’m dropping balls in the net then you’ll be like, ‘he’s a good lad but he’s not very good’.

"It’s been brilliant so far, I’m from Yorkshire so it’s always been brilliant. I’ve only played in a pre-season friendly and they had 5,000 at a pre-season friendly."
