Full-time verdict
Good first half, but much like the story so often last season, Boro punished for not killing the game off when on top. Have to settle for an opening day point. Plenty of positives, but clearly plenty of work still to do too.
Leo
An 84th-minute round of applause and chants of Leo, Leo after sad news of his father's passing. Leo stands and shows his appreciation. Lovely moment.
Coburn chance
Using his frame well to fashion an opening but O'Shea just about manages to block
Boro chance
Howson drills it from 20 yards into a crowded penalty area as it comes to him from a corner. Ricochets off a defender and out for a corner.
Boro moving back into the ascendancy.
Swift booked
Dragged back Jones as he knocked it past him. First Baggies player in the book.
Bola yellow
Rash tackle on the touchline. Nothing intentional but rightly booked. Bruce not happy and on the pitch remonstrating with the Boro defender, so he gets a yellow too.
Great save Steffen
Swift gets it in a dangerous area again. He dummies the shot to get by Bola but sees the big American charging out at him as his resulting shot is blocked by Steffen.
West Brom started this half really well.
GOAL: West Brom 1-1, Swift (51 mins)
West Brom level. Boro caught on the counter. Baggies break in numbers and Swift arrives in the area to fire a low cross beyond a helpless Steffen.
First half stand-outs
Akpom has been really positive up top, holding the ball up and linking play well. No real sights at goal for him, but he starts the season with an assist.
Both wing-backs have been really positive too. Giles has delivered some wicked balls into the box, one of which should have saw Watmore double Boro's lead.
And at the heart of Boro's defence and midfield, Lenihan and Howson have orchestrated things both in and out of possession.
First half verdict
Really solid half from Boro that. Only gripe is that they're not at least two up at this stage. Played some good stuff and carved open some good chances. Steffen only had one save to make, early on from a cross-come-shot.
Bola drive
Bola takes into his stride from about 30 yards and, encouraged to shoot by fans as it opens up, he obliges. Comfortable save for Button though.
Howson booked
First yellow of the season is Howson's as he's booked for a heavy tackle as West Brom looked to break. Hard to argue.
Watmore should score
Great play from Boro, patiently holding onto it until an opening presented itself. Crooks received it from Lenihan, quickly turned and sprayed left for Giles who gets to the byline, whips one low across goal and Watmore's run to get on the end of it was excellent but he can't get a strong enough touch on it from five yards to turn it goalwards as it's out for a goalkick. He should score.
Boro penalty appeals waved away
Watmore slipped in McGree and just as the midfielder is about to pull the trigger the defender gets in and steals the ball. Fans, players and Wilder asking for the penalty but looked like good defending to me.
Moments later as the ref awards West Brom a FK, a chorus of 'You're not fit to referee' rings around the Riverside.
Akpom
More good play from Akpom receiving the ball, beating his man and then laying it off.
'Chuba, Chuba' sing the Boro fans
Boro goal ruled out
They have it in the net again. Giles on hand to tap Watmore's ball in, but linesman flagged for offside from Jones' ball into Watmore.
Wilder playbook
Wilder talks a lot about how he wants it to look. That goal, that was it. Proper Wilder goal that
GOAL: Boro 1-0, Jones (10 mins)
Boro lead! Wonderful team goal. Howson does well under pressure and gives it Giles down the left who runs positively inside before slipping Akpom in behind. He then plays it across goal where Jones is on hand to smash home at the back post!
Save Steffen!
Heart in mouth moment as a Jed Wallace cross turns into a shot that very nearly catches Steffen out. The Boro keeper does very well to retreat and then acrobatically turns it over the bar.
