CWG 2022 : India medal standings and India medal tally in Birmingham Commonwealth Games

In table tennis, Sharath Kamal extended his domination at the Commonwealth Games by winning the gold medal in men’s singles event, thrashing England’s Liam Pitchford 4-1 in the final while Sathiyan Gnanasekaran came away with the Bronze.

It was heartbreak for the men’s hockey team, however, when they lost to a marauding Australia team 0-7 and had to settle for silver.

After a gap of 16 years, India’s women’s hockey team returned to the Commonwealth Games podium, defeating New Zealand via a thrilling tie-breaker in the bronze-medal playoff in Birmingham on Sunday. The India women’s cricket team, however, had to settle for silver after losing to Australia by 9 runs.

The Boxing gold rush for India on day 10 began with Nitu Ghanghas beating the host country’s Demie-Jade Rezstan 5-0 in a unanimous points decision to win gold in the women’s 48kg (Minimumweight) category, India’s 14th of the campaign.

Amit Panghal in the men’s 48kg-51kg (Flyweight) division took the same 5-0 route displaying clear supremacy against another English boxer, Kiaran Macdonald.

World Champion Nikhat Zareen then made it 17 golds for India beating Cary MC Naul of Northern Ireland in yet another 5-0 verdict for the Indians.

In Athletic action at the Alexander Stadium, Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker made history in the men’s Triple jump plotting an Indian 1-2 finish. Eldhose, fresh from his Athletics world championship final exploits, hopped, stepped and jumped 17.03m in his third attempt to clinch gold.

Aboobacker came close to his teammate with a 17.02m in his fifth attempt but that was the best he would go. Ja-Nhai Perinchief of Bermuda stopped an Indian clean sweep of the medals, taking bronze with a best of 16.92m as Praveen Chithravel, the third Indian in the fray, missed out to settle for fourth with 16.89m.

Sandeep Kumar made it seven medals from Athletics with a bronze in the men’s 10k walk. His effort of 38:49:21 was a personal best. Amit however finished 12th in the race.

Then it was Annu Rani’s turn in the women’s Javelin final. She won bronze, India’s eighth Athletics medal, with a throw of 60.00m. Shilpa Rani was seventh with an effort of 54.62m.

Sharath Kamal/Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Sharath Kamal/Sreeja Akula kept the table tennis medals coming when they won silver and gold in men’s doubles and mixed doubles respectively.

In squash, Dipika Pallikal/ Saurav Ghosal bagged the bronze while in badminton Kidambi Srikanth and Treesa Jolly/ Gayatri Gopichand won the bronze medals in the men’s singles and the women’s doubles respectively.

Bajrang Punia was a class apart while defending his title before Sakshi Malik produced a sensational gold medal winning effort as Indian wrestlers grabbed six medals, including three gold, at the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

Deepak Punia also contributed in swelling India’s medal tally by winning the men’s free style 86kg gold but birthday girl Anshu Malik (57kg) had to be content with a silver medal in her maiden CWG appearance.

Divya Kakran clinched a bronze in 68kg, winning the play-off in just 26 seconds against Tonga’s Tiger Lily. Mohit Grewal then ensured that India had a medal to show in all categories on Friday, winning the 125kg bronze play-off to cap a successful day in style.

On Wednesday, India’s medal rush continued after weightlifter Lovepreet Singh began the day with a bronze medal in the men’s 109 kg event in Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Singh lifted a total of 355 kg including a new National record of 192 kg in clean and jerk. Indian judoka Tulika Maan settled for a silver medal in the women’s 78kg category.

Saurav Ghosal created history as he won India’s first ever singles medal in squash at the Commonwealth Games. Ghosal triumphed over former world number one James Willstrop of England 11-6 11-1 11-4.

Later in the evening, Tejaswin Shankar won a bronze medal in the men’s high jump while Gurdeep Singh rounded off India’s weightlifting campaign with a bronze medal in the +109kg event.

Earlier on Tuesday, the lawn bowls team bagged a historic gold medal while the men’s team also won the yellow metal in table tennis with a 3-1 win after a close fight against Singapore. Indian heavyweight lifter Vikas Thakur added yet another Commonwealth Games medal to his kitty, winning a silver in the men’s 96kg. He lifted 346kg (155kg+191kg) to finish second and claim his third CWG medal across three editions. The Indian mixed badminton team lost 3-1 to Malaysia and had to settle for silver.

On Sunday, Indian judoka  Shushila Devi Likmabam signed off with a silver medal after losing the women’s 48kg final against South Africa’s Michaela Whitebooi. India’s Vijay Kumar Yadav also won the bronze in men’s 60kg judo at Commonwealth Games. Later in the evening, weightlifter Harjinder Kaur bagged a bronze in the Women’s 71 Kg weight category to take India’s tally up to 9.

Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli (73kg) lived up to his top billing as he clinched India’s third gold in the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Earlier on Sunday, 19-year old Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifted a total of 300kg across Snatch and Clean & Jerk to top the men’s 67kg category. Lalrinnunga also broke the Games record in his category with a 140kg lift in Snatch. On Saturday, Mirabai Chanu had headlined a four medal count with her gold medal in the women’s 49kg event. Sanket Sargar and Bindyarani Devi had clinched silver medals in men’s and women’s 55kg events respectively while Gururaja Poojary won bronze in men’s 61kg.

Australia sits atop the tally with a count of 32 medals, including 13 golds, while hosts England are second with 25 medals.
